Interview with Vincent Gilvarry

What is your writing process?
I rarely plan anything I do in detail. I usually get an idea for the next novel based on a line from the previous novel...and then go for it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I do remember the first book I ever read. It is called Tom Swift and the Sub Ocean Geotron and according to one so-called is the worst book ever written...but at the age of was okay by me.
How do you approach cover design?
I used to design my own but recently decided to purchase backgrounds from Shutterstock.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
If I can get past the first page and the first chapter with a book I persevere...but my one true favourite read is The Physician by Noah Gordon.
What do you read for pleasure?
I usually read fiction of any description but it has to be engaging in some way.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I usually read on my laptop...but when I go on holidays I usually take an ebook reader...but I am going to upgrade to an IPad as soon as I get around to it.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have tried just about every book marketing trick in the book but to no avail as yet.
Describe your desk
My desk is situated at a window at the back of my house overlooking the garden.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up roaming through the hills and mountains of Cairns in north Queensland but spent just as much time swimming in the fresh water rivers and sometimes the ocean.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in the year 2000 when I was at a loose end. A story popped into my head and it is now known as The Shadow of the Fire Dragon...
What's the story behind your latest book?
The idea behind my latest book is based hat the people of Planet Earth have become so obsessed with technology and electronic devices that they have become alienated from the most essential element of their being.
A directive from the highest of all celestial realms has decreed that in its current status Project Earth is not meeting the requirements expected of an evolving species and as a consequence, it is about to be terminated. This task of saving the Earth has been assigned to my primary character...the Yumi Master...Addric Sharano.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The idea of becoming an indie author was a result of having discovered Smashwords...many years ago.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am still trying to make my books visible on the big stage that is now known as the online publishing scene and Smashwords is a great opportunity to make that happen.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The best part of writing is the fact that it just happens like magic...its flows like water if the story is heading in the right direction...when it is takes a while to get back on track.
What do your fans mean to you?
I have received lots of wonderful comments on my website...really inspiring...these people like my work so I guess that sort of makes them fans in a way.
What are you working on next?
I have no idea what I will be working on next...but I'd like to try something completely different from Sci-fi and fantasy.
