Interview with V.R. Janis

When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was a kid. Storytelling was in my blood from an early age.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind the lastest book I published is a story about a sheltered young elf maiden who goes on an adventure. She has unknown powers and everyone wants something from her. She is in a fight for her life and a way to get home. This book is called "Stolen Light" and it is book one of "The Light Chronicles."
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I became an indie author because I wanted complete control over my books. I think that being an indie author has been an amazing journey and I learn something new all the time.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has helped by making it easier to distribute my eBooks and it is great to see it in so many locations.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for myself is losing myself in my character's world and story. Seeing the book after it is published doesn't hurt either. It is wonderful to share my form of storytelling.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean a lot to me. When I meet my fans in person or online it is a great experience. I love hearing their favorite parts of the books or what they thought of the book. It means a lot to meet the people who support me on this journey.
What are you working on next?
I am working on finishing "The Light Chronicles" series and I am starting another series. This new series is called "The Reflection Series" and the first book is called "Unique Adaptions". It is a dystopian fiction that merges with fantasy and ojibwe language.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.K Rowling, C.S Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and probably Jane Austen. I could keep going, but I have to say those are the top four.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. Also, the trait of not wanting to sit still. I like to get things done and I do not like to waste the day. I like to take my creativity to a new level and create new and interesting things.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I do Fine Art Native American Photography, marketing for my books, blogging, beading, reading, pyrography, crafts, and creating new and exciting author swag.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I like to read young adult fantasy, spy, or adventure stories. I like dragons, elves, fairies, unknown powers, mythical creatures. I look up books that have that subject matter and enjoy.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was about a young girl growing up in a wigwam and not understanding the changes that were happening to her people. I was twelve. I think that was the first full story that I wrote.
What is your writing process?
I create an idea for a story and then I usually outline the story by chapters. I create a title and then I write the story in a few days. It is the basic story of what happens to the character and then I add in the details on draft two.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I think the first story I remember reading was "The Littles." I remember thinking that I would have never thought there were such things and I searched out house for days for our very own Littles. I think that it sparked a great love of the unimaginable and I started creating all types of new creatures for my own stories.
