Interview with Fionn Jameson

When did you first start writing?
I started writing professionally in 2007, although I'd been writing all the way from junior high to college.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I first began writing with a mind towards publication, I had a completed manuscript and another one waiting for edits. I sent out the completed manuscript and while a few agents expressed some interest, the answers I got back were along the lines of "Sorry, we're already working on something like this" and I didn't want to give up on that particular novel. I'd been following J Konrath via his blog for some time and figured if I was going to jump into self-publishing, well, then was the time. "Then" was 2011, and I've come to realize that I won't turn to traditional publishing, not when I'm as obsessed with having control of every aspect of my books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love discovering the characters. It's like meeting new best friends. Another thing I love is when I'm plotting/outlining and suddenly things just come together, like Fate decided that I need a break and decides to toss me a freebie. I live for those moments.
What are you working on next?
I'm always working on something. Right now, I'm working on edits for KISS THE SHADOWS, which is a re-release of an older book I had originally published with an epublisher. After that, I'll be working on a short erotic romance story called BREAK ME.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh, this one's easy. I'm a huge, HUGE, huge fan of Terry Pratchett, Dianne Wynne Jones, and Brian Jacques.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I roll out of bed every morning, thinking about the words I need to write and edit.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Editing. Listening to music. Watching reruns of Adventure Time and Psych.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! It was the story of a young girl who gets run over by a car and then gets recruited by a Grim Reaper, but she ends up falling in love with him and then the world threatens to collapse from this impossibility...
What is your writing process?
Usually, I'll start off with a plot and stumble right into an outline. I used to be a die-hard pantser but after struggling to finish a 70k book for half a year, I decided that outlines are a godsend. Once I outline, I write out a brief chapter scene breakdown and then I get writing!
What do you read for pleasure?
I like reading craft books :)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm so in love with my Nook HD+ right now it's not even funny.
