Interview with Gary Hancock

What do you read for pleasure?
Dresden Files and RIvers of London are my favorites. I have read science fiction from the age of about seven and was drawn to Isaac Asimov in junior high and have read extensively of his works. I used to read the Matt Helm series and have all the books. The death of the Author kinda stopped any farther reading.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a ten inch Android tablet that I plug into the audio system of the car and listen as I drive.
Describe your desk
My "desk" is a monitor on a extendable arm stretching over my recliner with the keyboard resting on my tummy.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Grew up in rural Mississippi by a railroad track. I can sleep through loud noises without any trouble. I guess this helps my concentration as I wall myself off in the the "Cone of Silence" any time I please. My parents took me to a audiologist when I was a child and after the test, the doctor said I had the hearing of a dog. My freq. range was above normal hearing and the reason I didn't respond to them was just I didn't want to.
When did you first start writing?
February of this year.
What's the story behind your first book?
I woke up one morning in February and remember the dream I had that night. It was the story of a young girl growing up on Mars in the near future. I just wrote down the dream as it had occurred and that become the story "Internet Warrior". My friend Anne said it was ok, but it was just to technical for her tastes. I thought about it and then wrote what I knew about. Long range rifles and serial killers. The Mauser rifle used by the killer is a direct description of my own. It was fun to write. The FBI agent just called to me to write more about her.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I don't know if success if quite the right word, but it sure is fun. It is easy to publish what you write and I just love to see the downloads and even a couple of favorite author notices. Boss.
What are you working on next?
I have a new story about a Los Angeles detective that I drew the inspiration from a real life Police Officer. Officer John P. StJohn, know by his nickname, "Jigsaw John". The use of the Jigsaw in the title is in homage to this late outstanding person.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
A nice cup of coffee at my favorite country restaurant and store in McCall Creek, Mississippi. Granny's Corner has free coffee, free wifi, free paper and free home made Jelly. I have reached my retirement goals.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have had a computer at the house since November 1977 and even at my advanced age at the time, I managed to go through all the stages of a computer nerd. User, programmer, builder, black hat, and finally white hat. The video games of this era are so much better than the text ones I started with. I am playing "Conan Exiles" at the present.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Curious George of course. My mother was a teacher and I could read as soon as I could talk. They purchased a set of World Book encyclopedias for my older sisters and they never even opened one. When they arrived I sat down and went from vol 1 to the end. When "A" had all the pictures of the animals in bright color, I was hooked forever.
How do you approach cover design?
I am forced to use old and public domain images. The killer series, I tried to make them look like the fifties noir paperbacks with hoods, molls and shadow people.
What are your five favorite books.
This is going to sound like I am blowing my own horn. The foundation series of Asimov, Beyond Einstein, Harry Houdini biography written by his assistant, Matt Helm series, and Dresden Files.
