Interview with David Fuentes

Published 2014-02-10.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I love to write non-fiction. There is still a story to tell and I try to infuse that into my works; dissecting the need to know information with light hearted banter to keep the reader entertained.
What is your writing process?
The best thing a writer can do is write. I start off by thoroughly researching a number of different sites for information on how to FIND, ENTER & WIN online competitions as well as what lies behind the promotions we all wish we could win. As a comper myself I also use what I know is an effective strategy at winning more prizes and write down different bits of useful information as I go along. I have many books scheduled for creation and publication in the series. Sometimes different segments work better in other books in the series so even though I've only published 2 books so far with the 3rd nearing completion, the next bunch of instalments is already underway.
How do you approach cover design?
I found my cover designer off Gumtree. I placed a free ad on the site and was soon inundated with responses. I had in mind what I would like my cover to look like before I set up the ad. I was lucky to find my designer Tom whose previous works matched up nicely with my own ideas and foresight for the series. We go over what people would ideally like to win and try our best to represent that on the book covers. There is a lot of back and forth with a fair amount of tweaking to get it just right but it's all worth it in the end.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read books that help me win more prizes. There is very few of these out there on the market so I find myself reading a lot from blogs and on comping websites. The best pleasure for me is using the information gleaned from the sites to win some fabulous days out and life affirming experiences.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Competitions and freebies go hand in hand. I was invited to dan browns ebook launch outside Big Ben for a photo shoot at midnight and from this I was given a kindle paper white. I have also won both an iPad and iPad mini. The reading experience varies from device to device but I would say the iPad is best simply because I use it far more often and I (like many others) am a creature of habit.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I would welcome anyone's advice on book marketing. I have tried a number of different routes and find the best technique is to be persistent and to never, ever give up. You have to be in it to win it.
Describe your desk
A complete and utter mess!!. My main challenge with this has been to keep myself entertained whilst writing . I hooked up a laptop to stream some films but it was far to distracting. My best method so far has been putting on the radio and listening to some good tunes, keeping myself active where I can.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I live near london so this is ideal for film premieres, restaurants and other big events. These are the sort of prizes I go for and so my writing includes tips and advice on how anyone can acquire these as well as a whole plethora of others.
When did you first start writing?
A few years ago. I thought I'm doing really well at this so why not help others do the same?; share the love.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book WIN COMPETITIONS ONLINE : THE SKY'S THE LIMIT delves deeper into the tactics needed to be a successful comper and prize winner. The first book WIN COMPETITIONS ONLINE : A COMPETITORS GUIDE started people off on this journey and the third book; due for release later this year WIN COMPETITIONS ONLINE : A PROMOTERS GUIDE takes a look at the other side of the coin informing compers and promoters alike.
