Interview with Winslow Swan

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Atlanta, Georgia at the age the two where I learned to play every instrument in the orchestra. Music was my first love, but all of the characters that invaded my dreams were screaming to come to life onto the written page. My childhood was not average, as my parents took me to see stage plays at the Fabulous Fox Theater.
When did you first start writing?
My first story was written in an airplane when I was 9. My mother took me to Washington D.C. for my spring break vacation. As I looked down on the lights of the city as we were heading out, I wrote a short story about a monster that devours the city. My macabre sense of humor stemmed from the many Vincent Price movies that I grew up on.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Convincer is loosely based on two separate serial killers which I melded into one. The story seemed to flow out of me, although it did take four years to perfect. While some of the scenes are based on true events, the entire thing stems from my own weird imagination.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Since high school, I have always wanted to publish a book that people might enjoy reading. While in school, I made a rough draft of a science fiction trilogy. My creative writing teacher read it and said that it would make a very interesting book. At that time, the only way to independently publish was with a lot of money, something that has eluded me most of my life. Thank you, smashwords.com for the opportunity.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I have learned that I am the most successful failure that has ever taken up oxygen. Since this is my first time publishing, I hope that it will be my first success.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It exercises the demons that I call characters into cohesive stories. My first character, Jerry Conners, haunted me until I finished his story. I have been asked if there would be a sequel, but once I finish a character, I'm done.
What do your fans mean to you?
The reaction from my 'fans' on my books have been very good. They are the ones that keep me going and goad me into making my stories better and better.
What are you working on next?
I have several projects in the works. The latest is out of my comfort zone of horror and suspense, although it does deal with the classic monsters that we all know and love.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have several. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Nora Roberts, but I also enjoy the classics like Edgar Allen Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that God has granted me another day of life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy listening to old radio programs. My favorite was the CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Currently I'm up to episode 450 of 1399 episodes. I also visit my friends and bounce ideas off of them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Vividly.
What is your writing process?
I first have to get in the mood to write. It can be very difficult at times, but I have found that when I have some alone time away from everyone, I can put on some music and let the words flow.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My mother read me "Ferdinand the Bull", about a reluctant bull that did not perform the way everyone thought that it should. He just wanted to sit and smell the flowers.
