Interview with Liz Nelms

What do you read for pleasure?
At the moment, I am having an indulgent Georgette Heyer phase, by Jupiter! In my first teen fiction novel I named the magical cat 'Jupiter' as homage to her wonderful books. I also read other historical fiction, comedies, biographies and romance novels.
How do you approach cover design?
I am a very lucky writer in that I have an extremely talented friend who also happens to be a Graphic Designer, her name is Diane Elliott and she is currently working on initial designs for my new book 'Scent of a Rose.' I have to say her 'rough sketches' are nothing short of amazing and I cannot wait to see the final cover design.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am totally addicted to my iPad!
Describe your desk
My desk varies from the arm of the sofa, the kitchen table - even the steering wheel of my car! I write, scribble, note and answer emails from wherever I happen to be - I once read that a writer's office is in their head and I totally agree! Writers never really have time off from their work, we are always listening, observing and assimilating!
When did you first start writing?
I first wrote a short story in my teenage years - a very dark, disturbing story, very different to what I write today. I did however choose to write it with a vibrant pink biro - and I still have the original today. I have to say I hope my handwriting has improved since then.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Scent of a Rose is due very soon. I have been carrying around Samantha and Sebastian, the two main characters, in my head for nearly twenty years.
Sebastian is a rich, intelligent, successful musician who has realised he hasn't always made the best choices in life, he's keen on becoming a better person. He is very confident, but when he meets Samantha, and she doesn't fall at his feet like every other female he's encountered he gets a shock.
Samantha on the other hand has had a difficult upbringing by selfish parents, particularly her manipulative mother, this has left Samantha with low self esteem and a fear of making any changes to her life. At the start of the story we see Samantha finally facing up to the fact that only she can change her future and to do that she must take action.
Both characters go on their own personal journeys throughout the story, they have many obstacles to overcome before they are able to trust each other.
I chose to write the book from alternating perspectives using the 'close-up' narration method, in other words as if myself as the narrator were standing looking over the shoulder of the two main characters. I want the reader to understand the dilemmas facing both protagonists, particularly the male perspective.
This is because during my research I came across so many different websites that are dedicated to explaining what goes on in a man's head when it comes to love and relationships, because men traditionally 'don't talk' or 'show emotion' that us women really struggle to understand the male species.
If you choose to read Scent of a Rose I hope you enjoy the story and I would love it if you could leave me some feedback :)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy has to be when a story almost begins to write itself, that even with the most detailed plans for a book, somehow those characters come to life on the page or the screen and begin to head in directions I hadn't anticipated! I don't know how it happens - it just does!
What are you working on next?
That's a very good question and one that has been at the back of my mind for a few months now. I've been working on Scent of a Rose since April 2017 and I am now at the point where it's ready to go out to literary agents. So, yes I'm thinking about my next project!
The problem I think is I have too much choice - I have more ideas than I know what to do with. Upstairs, in a dusty corner down the side of the wardrobe, is a rose patterned box that is crammed with notes, partly-started stories and full manuscripts - my collection of rough work from the last 25 years. And at some point in the next few weeks I shall go and dig out that box, blow the dust off and see what will inspire me!
Who are your favorite authors?
Current authors it has to be Giselle Green and Karen Swan, I find their contemporary romantic fiction beyond enjoyable to read. I also have to say children's author Tom Moorhouse too, Tom has been incredibly generous with his time answering my pleas for help and advice, and has encouraged me on my writing journey. I love classic fiction too, so anything written by the Brontes, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and Joseph Conrad.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My parents moved house a few times throughout my childhood, each time moving to a larger and more expensive house. It is the Victorian semi that has most inspired my writing however, I haven't written it yet but there is a time travelling idea I have about a young boy who finds himself in a dusty, old fashioned Victorian house with black cast iron grates and stripped floorboards. The house in question is my childhood home but as it was when my father first took me there aged 6, before he painstakingly modernised it in the early 1980s. I will never forget the echoes of the high ceilinged rooms, the draughts and the persistent chill - he was frantically trying to install central heating during a particularly freezing winter. The house was as it had been when it was first built - it still had gas mantles and a big black cooking range - and a scullery!
