Interview with Marla Miller

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the south side of Chicago where the personal was the political. Catholics were Democrats, Protestants Republicans and everyone else was suspect. I formed my first opinion & wrote my 1st op-ed -that was published in the Chicago SunTimes- at age eleven. I was pissed off that neighbors complained our firefighters took time to rescue a kitten from our tree. I wrote an Op-Ed in a fury & mailed it. The Times published it in 'SOUND-OFF' and to this day, I love firefighters.
