Interview with Yasmine Black

What is your writing process?
Sporadic ideas randomly jotted down in a natural flow of inspiration then rearranged to create flow, as well as define perspective and highlight main topical issues/ points of contention...
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was part of the Encyclopedia Britannica set my father owned. I was about 7 years old but quite good at reading and had mistaken it as a children's book! I found myself enthralled by the characters... Bold, vivid and intensely human!
How do you approach cover design?
I try to capture the essence of the book in pictures... Symbolic elements and colours.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson. This series is a suspense thriller/crime series about a female heroine, Lisbeth Salander, and an investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist. The main characters are larger than life, unlikely heros and unlikely friends.

2. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. It is a novel, a poem... applied philosophy... a critique on politics, social-order & morality all beautifully woven together into an intricate and compelling plot!

3. Plato's Phaedo. It speaks for itself.

4. The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan. A candid poetic illustration of human struggles... our virtues and flaws... And the lies we weave around facts to disguise those failings within ourselves of which we are deeply ashamed.

5. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami. A compelling and mind-blowing exploration of metaphysical concepts that will leave you transfixed and transformed!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Melbourne Australia. My life experiences and interactions with people who have lived intense and extraordinary lives is largely what influences my writing.
When did you first start writing?
About three years ago...
What's the story behind your latest book?
My one and only novel the telepath wars is a critique on modern society's addiction to technological advancement designed to "decode" or "solve" the human mind. My novel explores how by "solving" human behaviour too well, we are in fact creating the ultimate weapon of human manipulation with the potential to end "human rights" and "free will" as we know it.
