Interview with Richard Lee

What do you read for pleasure?
Ashamed to say that I rarely read fiction these days. I keep reminding myself that I should. I was a bookseller for much of my life so that I'm addicted to simply reading the blurbs. Yes! I'm ashamed but where do people get the time to read?
Describe your Erotica titles
One of my most fervent critics, a worldly and well-read woman and a long-time friend, described my work as "Every adolescence's wet dream." I was initially shocked, but then I realised she was right, and I embraced her labelling.
What started as one, then two, then three volumes of sensual titillation, involving a growing list of characters, expanded into a range of smaller specific books relating to one or two of the characters from the three main novels. New material has been added to these smaller books.
If I were asked to describe the difference between my books and many of the other erotic stories available on the internet, I would immediately mention the loving interactions that all of my characters enjoy, along with the vast range of settings for their amorous play.
What are you working on next?
Many years ago I visited an elderly recluse living in the hilly forested area of south western Victoria in south east Australia. I had been told to look for Jack as he had worked on the winding dirt roads with draft horses and kept a lot of bits and pieces. I was looking for a wheel for an old cart that I wanted to restore.
Jack was able to help, then over a cup of billy tea he told me his life story - in particular, about the disappearance of his first love, Kate, when her father was forced to flee with the family because of his gambling debts. Jack spent a lifetime hoping to reconnect with his childhood sweetheart.
Jack's story moved me and so began the idea that his situation would form a part of a novel. This is what I'm working on. It's a story of two young men growing up in Australia between 1900 and 1936, one a poor boy and the other a rich lad.
Australia experienced a lot of unrest after world war one so there is a lot of rich history to be mined. Hopefully, I'll finish it soon. Richard
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I've finished three erotic novels, inspired by a need to pay the rent, as they say. There might be a fourth but I think I should get on with the big historical novel. I spend some time gardening and also travel to Sydney to stay with a friend and enjoy city life for a little while.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! It followed a bush fire on the heath near where I lived on the Sussex Downs when I was just fifteen. It must have been quite good because after reading it, my teacher was worried enough to refer me to the principal who enquired about my home life and if anything was bothering me. It went on to win best composition. Later in life, I wrote a Country Notebook column for our local paper.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do have access to a number of devices. However, my trusty iPhone 6 is my usual e-reading device. I also use an old Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Smashwords and Amazon are where I've parked my work but I've recently launched a blog that looks promising. You can click on the link below or search for
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a village in Suffolk, England and later my family moved to another village in Sussex. I came to Australia when I was 16 years old and lived in the country in Victoria. The excitement of travelling around the world on a ship and the thrill of seeing my first possums and giant lizards and giant eucalypts fired my imagination as it still does today.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I guess The Lord Of the Rings was the first significant story which I read when I was around thirteen years of age. As I got older and life became a little more serious I more or less moved to biography - Alexander King - 'I Should Have Kissed Her More, and others; and to philosophy - E. M. Coran - 'The Fall into time'. I've also enjoyed Jonathan Franzen. Even went to a talk he gave at the Sydney Town Hall a couple of years back. You might not find his work exciting but I do envy his ability to arrange everything with such a long view.
How do you approach cover design?
I select an artist for the main artwork then I choose and add the type. I also use the vast library of images provided by Amazon. Getting it right is so important. Having said that, I seem not to have tuned in to the heaving chests - male and/or female - that now saturate the Erotica lists.
What excites me?
Given that I have recently written for the erotica market, I get questions that hint at wanting to know where I get my inspiration, particularly for that genre. I usually smile gently and say that at my age, I've lived a fairly full and busy life with no regrets and things just come to me from that busy past. Not a very good answer, I agree.
What really excites me is good old mother nature and given that my early development was away from city life, plants and animals and landscapes are my main source of inspiration. Not saying that the heady days of living in bohemian Melbourne in the sixties and seventies doesn't provide a rich source of material. All you need is love!
