Interview with Yvi Valentin

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a suburb outside of Chicago. I've always loved going into the city so parts of my book take place in Chicago while other parts take place in other places I've been to or places I've always wanted to go.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing poetry when I was in the eighth grade and wrote my first short story during my freshman year of high school.
What is your writing process?
Lately I've been blasting music and write as I sing along. I've been a lot more productive since I started doing that.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing has always provided me with an outlet for my emotions. I can write about my feelings towards a certain situation or person in a book or poem and instantly feel better about everything. I guess you could say writing is therapeutic for me. I'm also a big fan of using my imagination! I get to spend all this time daydreaming and call it work! But it doesn't really feel like work.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was a crime mystery short story when I was in the ninth grade.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Deathly Nightshade and Belladonna were born from a game. I was invited to play a Pokemon version of Dungeons and Dragons and the character I created for the game was Belladonna. I loved creating her character so much that the book easily came into form...without the Pokemon, of course!
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on the last book of The Crazy Files Series. It feels like the end of an era and I'm excited to share how this series comes to a close. I also have a couple of new book ideas I'm working on.
What do you read for pleasure?
I mostly read Science Fiction novels along with books on ancient Egyptian history. Though lately I've been rereading the entire Harry Potter series, because why not? I love those books!
Who are your favorite authors?
My absolute favorite author is Dean Koontz, followed closely by Stephen King and J.K. Rowling
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Writing has been a huge part of my life for a long time so being an author was an obvious choice for me. Being an indie author specifically gave me the freedom I wanted. I wanted to be able to work without worrying about having a bad case of writers block and a deadline looming over my head. I get to set my own deadlines and work on whichever story excites me at any given moment.
