Interview with Zara Altair

What's the story behind your latest book?
My work in progress Felix Ravenna: A Mosaic is set in early 6th Century Italy when the Ostrogoth King Theoderic ruled all of Italy. The main character Argolicus is mentioned briefly several times in the Variae of Cassiodorus. However, we know little about his character.
When I waa reviewing research I came across a letter in the Variae of Cassiodorus (iii, 46) which has puzzled scholars. Who better to solve the mystery than the hero Argolicus?

I had so much fun writing the mystery, I decided to write more.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The short story has been sitting on my computer for a while. I decided that indie publishing was a way for readers who like historical mystery to enjoy a unique short read.
What do your fans mean to you?
Reader fans are everything! I write about an obscure time in the historical fiction genre. When people get in touch to talk about the stories, I'm thrilled. I love every single message. Plus, I know that not everyone writes a review. In this age of algorithms reviews help get books noticed. Every review is worth it's weight in gold. How can an author not love fans?
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a series of short story mysteries with Argolicus. Humanity doesn't change. People were the same in the early Sixth Century. The fun as a writer is exploring people in the context of the culture of the time.
My ongoing project is the novel Felix Ravenna: A Mosaic which brings to light the competing forces of Rome, Byzantium, and the ruling Ostrogoths.
