Interview with Zari Ballard

What do your fans mean to you?
My "fans" are amazing but I'd rather refer to them as friends because that's what they really are. On my blog, thenarcissisticpersonality.com, I receive literally hundreds of "letters" from readers in the comment section under each article and I answer each and every one. I've been corresponding with many of them for several years and feel like as if I know them so well. I also provide phone consultations and, therefore, have actually had the privilege of speaking with many readers one-on-one. Since writing the books, this interaction has been incredible and I am grateful for it every day.

When we're involved with a narcissist, as most of us know, our lives are practically interchangeable. Unless a person has actually experienced the craziness of this type of emotional abuse, they can never understand. For this reason, I created the books and the blog. To me, recovery from narcissist abuse is a team effort and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!
What are you working on next?
Right now I'm working on a short non-fiction tentatively titled "Narcissism in a Nutshell: 13 Telltale Signs That the Person You Love is an Emotional Manipulator". Basically, it's a quick study guide intended to confirm what a victim already knows to be true. I am also finishing up a book about my son who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of ten. He's 26-years old now and he's the most amazing person I know. This book is the story of our journey together but it's mostly about his amazing awesomeness:)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote my first full-length novel, a love story, at the age of eleven and it was entitled "Ruby Tuesday" (after a Rolling Stones song!). Believe it or not, I still have it. My girlfriend Debbie drew the cover picture of a teenage girl and boy holding hands and it's an amazing sketch to this day. I kept the "manuscript" hidden under my books in my school desk and my girlfriends would gather in a corner of the playground at recess to read each new chapter. It's 109 pages long and I wrote it during class using school paper which became a problem when teachers got wind of it at the end of the school year. On the last day of school, the principal asked me to turn it over and I denied the whole thing. Later, myself and three girlfriends smuggled the book out in three different sections! I remember that as if it was yesterday.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Fire and I love it. Even though I write books for Kindle, I wasn't too sure about the device itself...whether I'd like it or not. Then, I found one in a used book store about six months ago for an incredible price and I bought it. Now, I carry it everywhere - and especially to places where I know that I'm going to be waiting for awhile. If you think about it, having an e-reader is like being able to carry a bag of your favorite books around except there's no bag and no books. What a wonderful invention it is!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wonderful son, my 20-year old kitty, my 8-year old turtle, my busy schedule, and the fact that I've lived to see another day!

Developing a codependency to a partner who has a narcissistic or psychopathic personality will cause nothing but turmoil in our lives. We stay in the relationship, thinking that we can "fix" this person and love them out of their bad behavior, but the truth is that narcissists - just like sociopaths and psychopaths - can never be fixed...not with love, therapy, or any magic pill.
