Interview with Jennifer Kimberly Carberry

What's the story behind your latest book?
Insanity... no kidding... well not completely... my newest JOLK book has poor Mayla running all over the Underworld dealing with the Lord's and their stupid whims.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I can't stop making stories thought I should share.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I keep on getting hits on my books! It's pretty amazing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's therapy. Haha. No really, it is.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I can write all I want but if people don't enjoy it then I have accomplished nothing.
What are you working on next?
Book five of JOLK and a spin off series to JOLK.
Who are your favorite authors?
Nietzsche
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Love of life. Haha. True I promise.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I teach. I walk. I make art. I'm always on the move.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Here.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. Forget what it was called. It was too long ago.
What is your writing process?
Mental planning. Writing and re writing in my head.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Wait till Hellen Comes. Made me love creepy stories.
How do you approach cover design?
Find something with impact. I make all of my covers from art I've done.
What do you read for pleasure?
I've been doing more writing then reading lately. I write for easily three hours a day.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
None. I'm knew to this so I'm not sure how to go about it.
Describe your desk
Haha. My laptop, journals, scan disks, different kind of music boxes, a whole lot of faerie sculptures and dragons and pens and dictionary.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
It didn't. My brain's just plain nutty.
When did you first start writing?
When I was little. Not sure, maybe second grade.
So, do you have any tattoos?
A lot actually. But the wings I have on my back are my favorite. I designed them. They're not really a bird or a bat or a faerie. They're just wings. I sort of like it that way. I also favor the three I have on my fingers -- a heart, a star and the word 'wings'.
This one's really silly but, what's your favorite color?
My favorite color isn't actually a color but it's Black. Don't know why, it just is. It's my happy color. Sounds awful I know but I can't help it. Lol.
I know you write but I also know you love art. who is your favorite artist?
I'm not sure if anyone knows of the artist but my favorite art is a series known as the Unicorn Tapestries. They are hung in a very beautiful room in the Cloisters in NY City. They have a sort of haunting quality to them; ghost like, captivating.
