Interview with Zoe Wynns

When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was really little. My mom has books from when I was in preschool, and I was branching out and writing stories even then. Looking back on that time today, I realize that I always knew I was meant to be an author.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
It depends. I do scroll through Smashwords every so often and download some interesting-looking ones. I also browse on iBooks and Kindle for topics and genres I'm interested in. I have a soft spot for indie writers, and so I like to read and support their books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
There's only so long you can write without wanting more recognition than a file name on your laptop. I hit that point when I published my first book on Kindle, Journey To The End. This ignited the fire for publishing that is with me today.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Do the first five books in the Harry Potter series count? I absolutely love that series! The little and big conflicts, the tentatively developing friendships, and the bravery that is necessary to defeat Voldemort is written so well that it seems Hagrid could be just outside all of our doors with the acceptance letter to Hogwarts.
How old are you, and how has this influenced your writing?
Actually, I'm only fourteen! I know that people might underestimate me because of my age, but my books are powerful and leave a resonating message.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first REAL story I ever wrote, with chapters and a plot, was called Kamron's world. Yes, it was spelled like that! I wrote it with a friend in fifth grade. Now, looking back, I realized that my plot was shaky, my writing was weak, and the entire story made little sense. But I was so proud of it, and that will always mean something to me.
What is your writing process?
First, I write out a loose outline, making sure to hit the key points that I want to get across. Then, I just write! I've never been one for strict outlines guiding my keys down-to-the-word. I want to be able to have free reign on my own stories.
What do you read for pleasure?
Two words: SCIENCE FICTION. I used to be a total fantasy freak, but I picked up a few sci-fi books in the library and realized that I loved almost every single one I read.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Hm, I think I will always love my iPad for reading E-books. The quality is great and the screen is big enough to remind me of a real book. But in my opinion, paper books will pretty much always be better.
Describe your desk
A little nook sits off to the side, with paper stuffed in every spare space. A huge cabinet holds notebooks of all shapes and sizes. My laptop usually sits front and center, as it should. Bookcases rise with every kind of book. I love my desk.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Well, I have to juggle schoolwork with writing, so there's a lot of that. I also enjoy reading, and I do a lot of that. I also run on my school's track and field team, which is also very time consuming. Now that I think about it, it's a miracle I have any time at all to write!
