The author is a former geologist and environmental specialist with a special interest in history. The subjects he has chosen to address are the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps and biographical sketches of important mining figures in the history of the Western United States.

The Betty O’Neal Mine was discovered in 1877, incorporated in California twelve years later, and taken to patent in 1892. Lysander Getchell was the first to recognize the full potential of the mine. After his death in 1918 his son Noble became the general manager for the mine, and developed the Betty O’Neal into the largest producer of silver in Nevada throughout most of the 1920s.
