Amelia Blow

Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
For a short story, I usually pick the title first and then just start writing to see where it takes me, going back to change bits I'm not happy with once I've finished the first draft. Then I'll proofread and edit it for any spelling and grammatical errors before reading through the whole thing again to make sure I'm 100% happy with it.

For a longer novel, once I have an idea for something that I want to happen in the story, I'll write it down in my notebook. Then I'll draft an outline of major plot points from start to finish and describe each of the main characters before I even think about starting to write chapter one. Of course, none of this is set in stone and more often than not I find that 80% of everything I write down gets changed once I actually start writing!
How do you approach cover design?
I don't start thinking about the cover until I have a solid idea of the plotlines and characters in the story, and I don't start looking for a cover design until I've finished the first draft of my book. I'm never sure exactly what I want on the cover so I'm a big fan of pre-made covers because the more designs I look at, the more I know what I definitely don't want and eventually, I'll find something and realise that it fits with my book perfectly.
