A.M. Gray

Biography

I started writing fanfiction a couple of years ago as mrstrentreznor. I thought it was a wonderful concept to take existing characters and flesh them out a little more. Or to write the scenes that didn’t get filmed or written in the original work. I have given away more than a million words on fanfic; but I discovered that I had a million more in my head. And they were my words, my characters and my stories.
I am an overeducated Australian single mother. I feel I should be witty and informative about how many children and household pets I have, but really the chickens lay eggs and I am yet to see what use the teenagers are.
I also read a lot and play my music loud... really loud.

I won a short story writing competition. My winning entry for the bitingduckpress and storied competition, ’Protein’ was posted on the Storiad site, here:

Only 500 words. It’s actually quite hard to get ideas across in that few words. But I must have done it and they commented that I made them laugh, too.
Thanks to both http://bitingduckpress.com/ and storiad for running the competition.

Very sweet and romantic. Families can make you nuts, but you choose your friends and life partners too.

When you traditionally publish, there are a huge number of people to help you produce a book that is the best it can be: editor, proofreader, cover designer, typesetter, marketing advisers, sales advisers and promoters etcetera. A heap of people that many authors may not even be aware of. When you self publish, you are responsible for all of that. As I heard Carol Ervin say on Simon’s podcast recently, the great thing about self publishing is that you do it all yourself, and the worst thing about self publishing is that you do it all yourself. So how do you become all those people? Or how do you find ways to get around it for as little expenditure as possible? This book will tell you how. Simon runs a podcast called Rocking Self Publishing and records audio books for others. I am a recent listener, but he has very interesting guests and heaps of great advice, some of which he has distilled into this ebook. There are dozens of useful links to external sites. Simon suggests that if and when you make some sales, that you should re-invest in your product. And that is something that I still have issues with understanding; everything in an ebook can be changed. If you notice a section of text is missing or badly worded, just fix it, reload and update the file. Your cover looks bland? Change it and reload the file. And to keep with his ethos - free podcast - and bootstrapping authors, the book is free on Smashwords and Amazon should price match any day now…
