I began writing at fourteen years old. It was a short story based on the love between a slave and her slave owner. For some reason I was obsessed with the TV mini series North and South.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am lucky in that my parents have a very unique background. They grew up in the South and were sharecroppers. The stories they tell about picking corn, cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane for land owners - and making a pittance - are so terribly sad. Yet, my parent's lives fascinate me. My book, Rivers Under Water, is an ode to them and our ancestors. There is a beauty in fighting to survive in the worse circumstances.
