Alyssa James

Publisher info

Alyssa grew up in Central Queensland, Australia, the youngest of five children.

After school, she studied Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Queensland. During her days as a student, and also upon graduation, she moon-lighted in restaurants as a professional pianist.

Her first Speech Pathology job took her to the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Then, the lure of travelling the world called, and she left her profession for 18 months to become an international flight attendant for Qantas Airways. The excitement of travelling to exotic locations on different continents was fabulous and one she enjoyed…until she met her soul mate! Romance became the priority over travelling. Given that most of the time Alyssa was on one side of the world and her husband, an international pilot, was on the other, it was time to go back to Speech Pathology, the other profession she loves!

Now, still very happily married and three wonderful children later, Alyssa has obtained a Masters Degree in Science and continues to work in her busy private Speech Pathology practice. An avid reader of romance since her late teens, she began writing romances in the evenings when the birth of her twins kept her at home as a full-time mother. She is now published as a contemporary romance author by Escape Publications (Harlequin Australia Digital Imprint) and has self-published medieval romance "Knight of Her Heart" as Alyssa James.

Apart from her writing and work, Alyssa’s favourite pastimes include cheering her very sporty children on from the sidelines, travelling with the family, reading, entertaining, gardening and playing tennis. She and her family live south of Sydney on a five acre property that they share with a dog, three horses, seven goats, numerous chickens and visits from deer, wallabies, echidnas and beautiful native birds.

Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
My writing process varies. Sometimes I have a single idea in my head for a scene, other times I have a character who develops first rather than an actual plot line.
In Knight of Her Heart (penned as Alyssa James), the story evolved over eight years. It was a time when I wasn't writing due to the demands of a young family. I got to know the characters so well over that time! Surprisingly, when I sat down to write the book, there were some scenes that didn't go as I'd intended. It truly was as though the characters had minds of their own and were determined that their story should be written by them!!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of my favourite authors growing up was Enid Blyton. I loved the Secret Seven series, and it did have quite an impact on me! A group of us formed our own "Secret Six" club. At the time there were a number of burglaries in our town's main street. At age 11, I tiptoed out of our house, got on my bike after midnight and rode up the street to rouse the next member of our group and her brother. My friend Samantha woke up, but unfortunately - or perhaps fortunately! - her mum woke up as Sam was heading down the hall to wake her brother for our adventure and I was sent home!
Samantha and I started writing our own adventure stories together after that rather than trying to live them. I think I've wanted to be an author ever since.

"Knight of Her Heart" is the profoundly romantic and passionate journey of Lisette and Rowan - each vulnerable and less than perfect, yet worthy of finding happiness. It is a story of repentance and forgiveness; desperation and hope; and one in which loyalty, courage and love triumph over treachery and betrayal.
