Andrew James Wells

Biography

Andrew James Wells, born on 11th September 1975, is an English author originally from the small village of Yarm and now residing in Stockton.

Andrew started writing when he was fifteen years of age where he started writing poetry based on life experiences and issues he felt strongly about, these can be seen in his poetry book ‘Past Visions’.

Since writing, what is known now as, Past Visions in 1991, Andrew took a huge break before starting again in 2012 with a new writing method and a more mature outlook to his work. Again this poetry was based on his own experiences and issues he felt strongly about, starting with the eBook ‘Shattered Glass Mind’.

Andrew has always had a passion of how words, especially accompanied by music, could create a mood, a feeling and a range of emotions, and in some circumstances create a connection between the writer and the reader. Andrew put this into practice with his recent writing, the ability to connect with others and write about issues that affect us all.

Andrew is currently working on short stories.

Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and what impact it had on you?
The first story I think I ever took any real notice of was 'The Magic Faraway Tree'. This was something that was actually read to me as a small child and it unlocked my imagination. I loved the way the story was written and the many lands visited by the characters like the land of do as you please, the land of topsy turvy and I think another was the land of goodies. Some books or stories follow a basic storyline but this book seems to slide down the slippery-slip and open into many lands of imagination.

I think this book shows to think outside the box and not limit yourself to a set idea. To branch out and create a world that draws the reader in, unable to put the book down till it is finished. This is something that has helped me with my poetry, to put myself in other situations and write will feeling but also helped with my novel, to write and visualise the scenes, the characters and how it all interacts.
How do you approach cover design?
When it comes to cover design, I think of the subject matter of the book itself and create something that is eye catching, simple and hopefully makes the reader want to pick it up and read it to find out more. I do my own cover designs via Photoshop rather than employ a cover designer as I can be a bit picky when it comes to designs. I don't really have a complete idea when I start designing, I can create a structure and add and remove layers till I am happy with the final design. Cover designers charge for their services so this is the best option in creating my own design and that I can use my funds in getting paperback books published instead.
