Smashwords Interview

What are your five favorite books, and why?
I enjoy a variety of genres. My favorite books include Tolstoy's WAR & PEACE for its epic scope, Mark Twain's HUCKLEBERRY FINN for its views on slavery, John Grisham's A PAINTED HOUSE for its vividness and simplicity, John Steinbeck's GRAPES OF WRATH for its social commentary, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's GULAG ARCHIPELAGO for the stark realism of Soviet concentration camps and THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE, a novella by Carson McCullers for its twist on traditional love stories and details of place and characters. Being an autodidact by nature I have read at least 4,000 books, both fiction and non-fiction. In my Hollywood days, I read 3,000 screenplays that were available to me. My favorite reading hobby as a boy was reading various encyclopedias from A-Z. I have forgotten much more than I have retained, but oh! Such joy! Now I get to combine my love of reading with my love of writing.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy mass fiction sprinkled with non-fiction, especially science and economics.
