"When I was growing up, my sister and I spent our summers in Flagstaff in the ponderosa pine forests and at the public library: my two favorite places to be. The forest was where, with the neighborhood kids and our intermingled dog pack, we explored the mountain every day. Not far from where we lived was a buffalo preserve. We loved to see the buffalo calves sprinting, rolling, and tumbling as they played. It is this delight that I would like to pass on to young children through my story and illustrations.
"As a child I was intrigued by dioramas and the idea of being able to run and play inside a miniature imaginary world. I wanted to recreate that feeling with the artwork in this book. All of the characters and landscapes are formed using hand-cut, sculpted and layered, brightly colored paper. The art work is intended to tell a part of the story that the words can't tell. It is designed to make children feel as though they can walk into the pictures."
