John West

John West was born in Scotland. He spent most of his life in Africa, 30 years of it in the worlds of financial management and auditing.

John took second prize in the Scottish SPCA’s national writing competition, and was the first winner of the Waddington writing prize. Most recently, he was longlisted for the 2018 Commonwealth Short Story Prize.

He now splits his time between managing client finances, writing novels and short stories, and growing old disgracefully.

Smashwords Interview

What do you read for pleasure?
Labels on beer bottles.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Fight Club. Clockwork Orange. Stranger in a Strange Land. Illusions. And maybe Lord of the Rings, although that is the only one that I have read only once. For obvious reasons.

Unless you're including graphic novels. Then the list could change slightly.

Aspiring writers at weekly meetings are expected to be able to write stories on cue. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes writing prompts spawn a semi-decent idea, which can be tweaked and prodded into pretending it's a real story. These aren't those. These are the ones that were left bleeding on the floor of the operating theatre. Not full stories. Just bits of scenes. Snippets.

Enter a dark underworld where rock stars and ancient demons collide. Sex magick rituals in nightclubs. Ancient demons in the mosh pit. Combining music, mysticism and mayhem, this work of fiction is set against the real rock n roll underworld of 1980s Johannesburg. A humble tribute to the lost generation, to those of us who survived, and to the fallen heroes who live on in our hearts.
