How do you approach cover design?
Sort of in the same way I attack a good title for my work. It's an organic process, no doubt. There are a few guidelines that I keep in mind; some of which adhere to traditional tips given by the consensus. Goes the adage about judging a book by its cover, right? Well, I definitely keep that in mind. But with that, I still try and make it something that could not only stand out on its own, but have an undercurrent of my perosnal touch. I believe it should encompass the core message of the story. It should be funky, sexy, though-provoking. It should stir you inasmuch as the content would.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I'm like the Jack Sprat of the literary world, so my wife does the real reading. Not that I'm not a fan of anyone, I just want to avoid many of those great novelists' ideas, themes, even the way in which they craft their sentences— to bleed into my work too much. It may be a neurotic ideology and counterintuitive as far as just becoming a better storyteller... I do read, though. It just happens to be miscellaneous stuff from random Wikipedia articles to blog posts. I am cognizant of keeping the closed captioning on whenever I'm watching a movie.
