Clifford Babson

Biography

Captain Clifford Babson is a retired ship’s Captain with over 20 years of seafaring experience. He started his maritime career in the US Navy in 1984, serving a single enlistment in the Navigation Department of a Perry Class Fast Frigate.

While studying aviation in college, Operation Desert Storm created a huge shortage of trained Seaman and Captain Babson went back to sea again. This time as an Able Bodied Seaman in the US Merchant Marine. He gained his license in just a few years, rising to the rank of Third Mate, and spent the better part of the next 20 years serving as a deck officer on a wide variety of ships. From dirty freighters and tankers to shiny white yachts and research vessels, he navigated them through every ocean to all seven continents. Always taking the time to learn the story of the strange new lands visited, he collected hundreds of stories along the way.

He retired as a Master Mariner in 2007, just as soon as his daughter was old enough to realize he was gone. He now lives in Upstate NY, with his wife and daughter, and works as an Energy Efficiency Engineer. Not the first odyssey to end in Ithaca, and likely not the last.
