James Carter was born in Northland in 1954. He is of New Zealand European descent, has an engineering background, and works as a literacy tutor. James has a particular interest in local history, as his mother’s grandfather served here in the British Army during the 1830’s. This ancestor’s regiment, the ‘58th ‘featured in some notable local battles with Maori, conflicts which mostly resulted in British defeat. In what James enjoys as a positive sign of modern New Zealand, many of his much-loved grandchildren are direct descendants of Northern Maori.

This isn't a genre I normally enjoy. However, this one is fun and different!

It has got all the info, plenty of it that's for sure. I am impressed by the HUGE amount of hard work that must have gone into this.

Very well written with a smooth journey from start to finish. Has some nice quotes and anecdotes. In some ways this could be a bit dry for some people, however it is never boring and is obviously not an easy subject. This is filled with good practical, real, sensible advice of a quality and depth I think is rare in this genre. Interesting for everyone and anyone. Would make a great gift for that work-bound person in your life. Certainly made me think.
