Smashwords Interview

What's the Dreadful Desire series all about?
It's about sexual fantasies, all the quick, lusty fantasies that we carry around in the back of our minds. When I was young - much too young, really - I read a lot of very frank books about sexuality: Anais Nin, Erica Jong, particularly Nancy Friday. She has a whole series about people's sexual fantasies (at first women's fantasies, but she branched out later on) and the sort of taboo thoughts that fascinate us. These stories aim to explore such fantasies and bring them even more vividly to life.
Let's start with Faceless Strangers. What sort of stories does it tell?
Stories about anonymous sex, about what Erica Jong called the "zipless fuck." Two people (or more, sometimes much more depending on the story) who never actually set eyes on each other, who never know each other's names, get swept up into a frenzy of mad lust that leaves them reeling dizzily and thoroughly sated, and they go back to their everyday lives with no one else the wiser. That's what all these stories are about, in a way, but Faceless Strangers might be the most literal about it.

18-year-old Vanessa doesn't watch sports, doesn't like crowds and definitely doesn't like spending her Friday night at a football game. But when a group of men behind her start to sneak their hands up the back of her hips and between her thighs, she finds herself struggling to hide her arousal from the rest of her family, and more and more tempted to sneak away beneath the bleachers...

  • Sisterhood of the Brass Mask on June 12, 2021

Humor in erotica can be a tricky thing: the genre so often seems to mock its own characters that just seeing the category can make me nervous. Thankfully that isn't the case at all here, where the understated humor emerges naturally from the story while still treating sex as something beautiful and its characters with respect and sympathy. The worldbuilding is wonderful, the language is very poetic and evocative of senses that are easy to overlook in erotica, and for a plot that could be described as revolving around a demonic sex cult, it ends up being a very positive, even oddly wholesome story with a fun twist ending. Absolutely recommend!
  • Hunted on June 16, 2021

Goblins and witch ghosts and tentacles, oh my! This was a very fun read: the lusty menagerie goes well beyond the horde of goblins one might expect, though it doesn't lack for them either, and features an imaginative variety of encounters throughout a story that moves quickly from start to finish. Very well done!
  • Arrival (A Twisty Tale) on Aug. 01, 2021

So other people do have inappropriate thoughts about crowded subways! This story explores one of my all-time favorite fantasies with nicely detailed descriptions that really help bring it to life (not an easy task with a setting as complicated and dynamic as a moving train) and it's written with a very conversational and engaging style, moving with a gradual, seductive pace that I really enjoyed. It's also told from a largely male perspective, something of a novelty for me, and there's a twist at the end that I certainly won't spoil but was nonetheless very fun. Highly recommended!
  • The Oviposition Chronicles - Missionary on Aug. 22, 2021

There's no violence in this story, and none of the cruelty or humiliation that too often comes with taboo erotica, and yet this is one of the eeriest tales I've read - and that's a good thing! Writing a monstrous erotica story from the monster's own perspective is an ambitious touch, and having the monster not only narrate the encounter but draw the reader into it lends it an unsettling quality that's hard to describe. The language is vivid and poetic, the touches of dry humor here and there are all the sharper for being so sparing, and there's a compelling blend of darkness and gentle affection throughout the story. Dark erotica doesn't need to be brutal or degrading to leave a haunting impression, as this story perfectly demonstrates.
  • Tidy Girl Part 1 - A Pressing Need on Aug. 22, 2021

Not exactly a romantic story, but not really dubcon either, "A Pressing Need" successfully conveys the overwhelming intensity of newfound desire for a repressed and proper girl with a slightly sardonic, comically exaggerated but nonetheless genuine tone. Consent's always fleeting but never entirely taken away, and it boasts one of the hottest first kisses I've ever read in an erotica story. Highly recommended!
  • Goblin Run on Aug. 28, 2021

What is it about goblins that makes them so strangely appealing? Is it that they're the fairy-tale archetype of all the petty, lusty adolescent boys we dealt with growing up, during a time of life when sex was an ominous but enticing curiosity? Is it that, being smaller and so very insatiable, they can completely overwhelm one with sex, two or three or five or six at a time? Goblin Run delves into all that and more with gusto, in a fantasy setting that's vividly brought to life and a heroine who breaks the mold of the typical erotica protagonist, and whose eventual fate kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. If you've ever felt a twinge of erotic intrigue about just what might happen when a pack of goblins actually get their hands on a fleeing maiden, definitely give this story a read!
  • Tidy Girl Part 2 - Butterfingers on Sep. 01, 2021

The Tidy Girl saga continues with a slower paced and oddly endearing interlude, despite some of the coarse language involved. The story's as well-written and literate as the previous chapter, the action's very intense and enticingly described, and though I'm not really a fan of humiliating dirty talk, it's mixed here with an almost wholesome empathy and affection for Gemma. Definitely give it a read, especially if you're a fan of sexual awakenings and self-discovery!
  • Gallic Sausage on Sep. 13, 2021

There's a special place in my heart for shorter erotica that brings to life just one crazy night in an otherwise ordinary life, that captures a single vivid snapshot of a fantasy. The Twisty series aims for exactly that, and while I'm not sure I'd call Nicola's life otherwise-ordinary, that unforgettable night in the parking lot's a torrid, playfully twisted affair with evocative descriptions, clever word play, and a contrast of hedonistic desire and eloquent language that only makes the experience all the more enticing. Definitely check it out!
  • Night of the Forgotten on Sep. 13, 2021

Book five of a fantasy series isn't really the best place to start reading, but this story, combined with the separate short story Sisterhood of the Brass Mask, is more than wonderful enough to convince me to go back and read the rest. Absolutely lush, beautiful language, a fascinating setting, compelling and sympathetic characters and an erotic journey to the underworld and back in the best mythological traditions combine with a glimpse of the larger conflict that looms throughout the series to bring the world of While the Gods Slumber to life. This isn't just erotica (though it's very much that too), it's an intricate storyline set in a beautifully realized African-fantasy setting that easily rivals any traditional fantasy series out there.
  • Exploring Karen on Sep. 13, 2021

For some reason I was a little nervous going into a dubcon story about an aunt and her nephews, but this story's absolutely a lot of fun. The premise and how it all unfolds is shockingly (and dare I say deliciously) scandalous, while the dubiousness of Karen's consent is very gentle and tastefully handled. And besides, who wouldn't give in as quickly to a long weekend with guys this talented? It's a very steamy and unforgettable ride, and very much recommended!
  • Frank (A Gothic Folly) on Sep. 27, 2021

This might be my favorite Paragonas Vaunt story so far. I was expecting erotica humor in the vein of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and there are some funny moments - the opening line in particular nearly made me spout out my drink - but there's a genuine, thoughtful romantic story here too, and a very sex-positive (plus really kinky and unconventional) relationship between the spirited Heidi and her very own, um, fully equipped Frank. If you're at all a fan of Gothic horror, or want a Halloween erotica tale with lots of raunch and heart, give this one a read!
  • Free Flower (A Twisty Tale) on Oct. 21, 2021

Fiction written in the second person is rare enough. A second-person erotica story is particularly fraught, and a second-person erotica free use story has all kinds of potential to go wrong: this story, however, proves that it actually can be done! Lots of clever word play, evocative descriptions, a sympathetic treatment of the protagonist and some particularly poetic details about the setting and context come together to bring the premise to vivid life. While such a narrative framework may remain an experimental niche, Free Flower's use of it should absolutely be counted as a success.
  • Xenofestation 1-01 - Amber Alert on Feb. 14, 2022

I've been curious about this series for a long while, and it was definitely worth the wait! Implantation and alien creatures can admittedly give me the heebie-jeebies, but for fans of such darker erotica themes, it's all brought to very vivid life, both unsettling and darkly fascinating. Beyond that, the worldbuilding is astonishingly detailed and the narrative far more ambitious than any ordinary erotica: it easily rivals any mainstream science-fiction story that I've read, and is thoroughly researched and scientifically literate. The future society it portrays is one that's very plausible, and the characters, from the shyly curious Amber to the much more forthright, cynically confident Ornella, are all drawn in nuanced, realistic strokes. If you're looking for dark, twisted but strangely engrossing sci-fi erotica, this is one you'll absolutely want to check out!
  • Xenofestation 1-02 - Beached on March 15, 2022

The Xenofestation saga continues, with even more elaborate world building and a very detailed, scientifically literate context for everything that unfolds. Without spoiling anything, new characters are introduced that offer a very different perspective on the proceedings, and a new sexual dynamic unlike anything so far. And the sheer scope of the story, how it bounces back and forth between so many interwoven plot threads and characters separated by literal light years, is unlike any erotica I've read. I was expecting "Aliens" with sex, but the setting owes much more to classic sci-fi authors like Larry Niven and Octavia Butler. If you aren't squeamish about alien monster sex, absolutely give this one a read!
  • Xenofestation 1-03 - Primagravida on April 20, 2022

The kinky erotic promise of the last two books is fulfilled with this entry, where every shocking permutation of alien impregnation one might imagine - and a few more that certainly defied my imagination! - is brought to vivid life. The futuristic setting remains as richly detailed as ever, with a political and cultural subtext that cleverly lampoons today's world, the writing style is expansive, detailed, and effortlessly literate, and the sex is everything you thought a lust-crazed insectoid monster orgy could be and then some. The tone, though approaching unsettling sci-fi horror at times, wavers between reluctance and enthusiasm without ever quite dipping all the way into non-consent, and this story in particular, after a lighthearted peek at Ornella's entry into the program, is all about wild, nonstop alien breeding. Tentacles, ovipositors, and creepy-crawly mating frenzies aren't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but for fans of the genre, this is absolutely one of the best titles out there. And to think, this is only the halfway mark for the Xenofestation series...
  • Xenofestation 1-04 - The Maiden and the Pit on May 12, 2022

The whole Xenofestation series has been a darkly erotic tour de force, and this is my favorite entry so far. The setting takes a break from the high-tech laboratories and urban dystopia of the first few books to, for the most part, focus on a rural colony and a pair of characters who lend it more of a space western feel, again showing just how versatile Paragonas is at juggling all these different intersecting stories and perspectives. Beatriz and Sam are a couple that, in their own rather forthright way, share a very genuine and romantic bond, which raises the stakes for the horrors that inevitably befall them (this is Xenofestation, after all, not Little House on the Prairie Planet). This is perhaps the first time since the prologue that the characters have found themselves in real danger - not just weird impregnation or unsettling situations, but a life-or-death struggle - and the story takes care to let us get to know both of the leads so that their predicament hits all the harder. With a series like this one, and such a varied tone, there's a very authentic sense of uncertainty about what might happen next. Everyone could live happily ever after, or it might be the end of the universe. Either way, I can't wait to see what's next!
  • Xenofestation 1-05 - A Prayer Before Bed on June 23, 2022

After the touches of romance and pastoral life in The Maiden and the Pit, the Xenofestation series takes a hard swerve back towards dark, monstrous sci-fi erotica with A Prayer Before Bed. The villains are despicable, the story's gripping, and the alien monster is perhaps the most memorable in the series so far, a grisly fusion of insectoid horror and carnal bliss. The story also offers a very intriguing clue near the end about where the series as a whole might be leading. I won't spoil it here, but it's certainly left me curious about the next chapter. Vicious crime syndicates, desperate heroines, and, ahem, lusty praying mantises... A Prayer Before Bed has it all!
  • Xenofestation 1-06 - Terra Veneri on July 23, 2022

The end is here - for now, at least - and it's every bit as steamy a roller-coaster ride as the rest of the series. From a very suspenseful and wonderfully written opening chapter that would fit right into a mainstream sci-fi thriller, and a new and entirely different sort of character in Athena Wrent whose personality is both gratingly familiar and oddly endearing, to Ornella's surprising and memorably sexy first encounter with an alien, to the cliffhanger return of a character that I won't spoil here, Xenofestation continues to blur the lines between monster erotica and literary science-fiction. Whether you're a sci-fi horror fan who's always been a little intrigued by the monsters or an erotica fan who's looking for an engaging story and compelling characters to go with the smut, this is one series you should absolutely check out!
  • While the Gods Slumber on Aug. 25, 2022

After reading several later books in the series, it was high time I went back to While the Gods Slumber to see how it all started - and it's as fantastic a read as any of the books in the WTGS cycle, with no hint of being an early tale. The series hits the ground running with its intricate setting and crafts an elaborate fantasy world with its own history, geography, and mystical lore right from the start. This isn't your typical erotica, but a sprawling fantasy adventure that also happens to feature a lot of very steamy sex. The sex here is always sensual and uplifting, featuring well-developed characters for whom desire is an important, but not the defining, aspect. Another thing I love about Yancy Ball's works is their sense of idealism and empathy. None of the human characters here can really be called a villain, and, even among the demons whose existence underscores the mysteries of Jarra's history, only one can truly be considered a monster. Yancy Ball is an inspiration when it comes to literary erotica: When the Gods Slumber offers plenty of passionate sex along with a compelling heroine and her quest for identity in an engrossing fantasy world.
  • Guard Rail on Oct. 20, 2022

This review's been a long while coming, but Guard Rail was absolutely worth the wait. Paragonas's writing style is as smooth and quickly flowing as ever, even while immersed in the language and perspective of a Victorian heroine. There's a tremendous amount of historical authenticity on display here in details both big and small, from 19th century train routes to tarot card motifs to allusions to Penny Dreadfuls and paraffin lamps, and, in contrast to the sci-fi horror of Xenofestation or the Oviposition Chronicles, this is very much a darkly erotic fairy-tale brimming with folklore imagery. It's also more of a slow burn with the erotic elements only coming into focus about halfway through, but once they take hold, it's a subterranean roller-coaster ride all the way through to the end, and just as ominously, wickedly seductive as any of the lusty monsters in the Paragonas Vaunt menagerie. "Guard Rail" is a kinky cosmic horror tale perfectly suited for Halloween, a Gothic horror fantasy with all the carnal subtext turned into sweaty, messy, blushingly explicit text, and made all the more enticing by never losing Charlotte's prim Victorian voice along the way. If you're a fan of both atmospheric horror - the deep dark woods and desolate mountains and the cavernous darkness hidden beneath - and of infernal couplings with a monstrously irresistible entity, this is one erotic horror piece you can't afford to miss.
  • Blossom on Oct. 25, 2022

This is the second story in the While the Gods Slumber saga, and it's just as imaginative and vividly described as all of Yancy's tales. I've been reading them somewhat out of order, so my impression of Jarra's demons, based on While the Gods Slumber and Sisterhood of the Brass Mask, had ranged from sadistic villainy to playful comic relief. Without revealing any spoilers, Blossom delves into another, more philosophical side of their nature and the role in the WtGS series as the story unfolds through the eyes of the gentle and erudite protagonist Keya, who embarks upon a journey alongside her more pragmatic bodyguard Jinai to find her missing brother. The writing style is poetic and quickly flowing, painting striking images and sketching out the contours of its broader mythology without ever bogging down the narrative in exposition, and the erotic elements are as sensually described and wickedly imaginative as every Jarra story I've read so far. In this case, there's a touch of supernatural darkness that almost dips into horror here and there, but Yancy's stories possess a refreshing optimism and sense of idealism, a perspective that's always focused on the best in people rather than the worst, and Blossom's no exception. If the fictional demon lore of While the Gods Slumber, hinted at here and there in other tales, has you intrigued, this story will answer quite a few questions while raising others, even as it leaves you breathless at the carnal possibilities. Highly, highly recommended!
  • Xenofestation 2-01 - Leap of Faith on Feb. 05, 2023

The Xenofestation series makes its triumphant return! The pace is a little more deliberate this time, with more of the deceptively casual worldbuilding and social satire that's come to mark the series, and with more of a dark. unsettling focus this time on religious indoctrination and cult mentality. The story begins with a brief look at two strange and sinister characters with an intriguing perspective of their own, and then we're off to meet a far-ranging mixture of new and returning characters. Patience Mance joins the first season's Beatriz Ruiz as an innocent and seemingly doomed soul, but this time with a background filled with grim religious satire, and we learn a little more about the mysterious mercenary Ortiz, the nosy apartment neighbor Athena Wrent, and Tali, the newest programme recruit. Ornella once again steals the show, however, as an enthusiastic fan of the macabre horrors to be found in the xenoplantaton programme, and the creature(s) she has to contend with here are among the most monstrously imaginative in the series so far. I can't guess where exactly the story might be leading yet, but it's hurtling toward a much more ambitious, possibly even spiritual, direction than I'd originally expected. Five out of five stars, and very highly recommended!
  • The Half's Way on Feb. 05, 2023

The first question to ask about The Half's Way is why in the world is this book being offered for free? It's a fantastic novella-length introduction to an erotica fantasy world at once very different from the Jarra cycle and told with Yancy's familiar voice and very uplifting themes. Like the WtGS books, every character, even the worst of the antagonists, is afforded some measure of empathy and consideration, written in a way that allows us to understand their perspective even when we don't agree with them at all. Orc culture's handled with a depth that doesn't usually accompany that phrase, as a warrior society that's vital and hedonistic but also thoughtful and reflective when it needs to be, while their human counterparts are presented as really neither better nor worse, just with different approaches and priorities. Shauba, born of an orcish father and human mother, struggles to find her place in a world that seems to split her down the middle, but, with the help of her best friend Mikel, just might be able to use her unique perspective to save her father's tribe. Yancy's such a skillful writer when it comes to natural dialogue, fleshing out characters and relationships, and building up the setting with a light touch that never drags down the pace that the erotic elements can end up being unfairly overlooked. But they're there too, and described with a very poetic and steamy language that never shames anyone even while exploring the most thrilling scenarios. While the Gods Slumber has always been inspiring as an example of smart, literary erotica that doubles as compelling fantasy adventure, and Shauba's story offers the same rare pleasure. And it's a mind-boggling steal as a free download. There's no reason not to give it a read!
  • Lust in the Woods on Feb. 11, 2023

From what I understand, this is the author's very first erotica story, and it's something of a stylistic experiment. It's written in both the first and second person, which is always a big risk with a genre as deeply personal as erotica: if I found myself being written into, say, a non-consent scene through the use of "you," I'd nope out of the story and never look back. Thankfully that isn't the case here at all. The situation and characters are distinct enough that it always felt like I was inhabiting a role rather than being addressed as myself, and the tone is light, breezy, and fun throughout, so that it felt more like an intimate diary entry throughout the story. It's priced perfectly for its short length, and, honestly, in today's mile-a-minute world, quick sexy literary romps aren't a bad thing at all! Give it a try, especially if, like me, you have something of an odd weakness when it comes to sex in the deep and wild woods...
  • Kiss and Make Love on Feb. 11, 2023

This story worried me a bit at the start with the raw fury in the dialogue: it's very well written and realistic, which just made it all the more impactful! But the situation soon takes a plausible but steamy off-ramp into the one thing that brings this bickering couple together, and things get very hot and heavy. I think a lot of us have had a relationship like that in our lives, where the one thing we have in common, the one thing that's sure to put an end to any argument, is wild, frenzied sex. That sort of chemistry often isn't sustainable in the long run, but Aurelia and Franky find a way make it work, and their erotic journey from petty argument to sweaty passion to contented stillness is all sorts of fun to experience.
  • Xenofestation 2-02 - The Fence on Feb. 19, 2023

The interstellar erotica saga continues as different pieces of the puzzle that's been building up since the very first chapter start to come together. Characters who, so far, have been following their own narrative strands are beginning to meet one another, and the story's starting to converge upon a single deepening mystery that's emerging from the background. While that mystery continues to quietly build, we have the sleazy and unscrupulous Arlo Frenk to keep us company, a sci-fi scoundrel that you might describe as Han Solo being played by Joe Pesci. He'd be an infuriating character if he weren't so harmless, and so thoroughly outmatched by the people he's dealing with. As it is, there's a great deal of humor to mine from his weaselly personality, and the biting social satire that Xenofestation's always handled as deftly as its lusty menagerie becomes all the more tightly focused once we get to see Terra's cultural foibles through his eyes. The sinister twin siblings Claire and Julie, last featured in Leap of Faith's ominous prologue, make a very welcome return here while Tali's drawn deeper into the Programme and some of its familiar faces, and Dr. Natalie Cooper gets a chance to shine, and to reveal an unexpectedly compassionate side, as she deals with the headstrong Patience. Through it all, there's every bit as much beastly erotica as fans have come to expect from the Xenofestation series, and it's vividly, wickedly - and, most of all, cleverly - described here in ways that put most monstrous erotica efforts to shame. The combination of alien smut and smart, suspenseful sci-fi adventure reaches new heights here, and the story ends with a playful twist that made me blink, reread a passage in surprise, and then laugh aloud when I discovered it (needless to say, I won't spoil it here). This chapter's very thoroughly recommended, and I can't wait to see where the story goes next, and just what sort of tapestry all these increasingly interwoven character threads might end up forming.
  • Xenofestation 2-03 - Orbital Insertion on March 27, 2023

Luna. Delicate shining badge pinned upon the inky night. Luna. Nakedly exposed beneath the harsh glare of the Sun, silvery-white and frigid. Luna. Too bloody far away. Those are the first words of this latest Xenofestation chapter, and a taste of just how evocative, literary, and playfully subversive Paragonas Vaunt's writing tone is from start to finish. Questions that have lingered since the very first page of the series are answered at last, and a new character's introduced with a very different, somewhat opposite perspective of the heroines we've met so far. The monsters themselves are also cleverly inverted in this story, with a new kind of creature that, though archetypal, has never shown up in Xenofestation before, and a new sort of relationship with reluctant test subject Amber. The mixture of engaging characters, dry wit, and smart writing with some of the kinkiest monster erotica imaginable is astonishing: there are clever insights into everything from orbital mechanics to gravitational freefall, and I can honestly say I never expected an erotica tale to conceal a J.G. Ballard reference (but if anyone was going to pull it off, it would be PV). All of that's the seasoning, though. The main course, as always, is the creepy/sexy aliens and the women who love (erm, making that have conflicted but very torrid feelings about) them, and fans of sci-fi monster smut will find this to be a lusty tour de force, with another memorable cliffhanger ending and a glimpse at a new kind of horror we've only heard about so far. Highly recommended for kinky alien fans, for dark sci-fi erotica readers, and particularly for fans who like their carnal fantasies wrapped up in some of the smartest, most expansive storytelling in the genre.
  • Xenofestation 2-04 - Orbital Decay on April 30, 2023

The Xenofestation's unique fusion of torrid erotic and grotesque horror grows still darker and more horrific in this heart-stopping entry. There are light touches of humor at the start, the dry and understated wit that Paragonas Vaunt does so well, but once the danger ramps up, it turns as bleak and relentless as a nightmare. There's nothing romantic here, and this isn't about sex in any human sense, not even in a metaphorical way: this is all about the biology and evolutionary primacy of reproduction, and the struggle of the rational mind against cellular instinct. Xenofestation is perhaps best seen as a universe where reproduction, rather than predation, has become the battleground of natural selection, and that dark, vicious twist on Darwinism is given its most uncompromising treatment here. I won't spoil any of the details, but, rather than the sprawling scope of previous chapters, there are just two parallel storylines here, one involving Nicole and the other Ortiz and her rough-and-tumble crew, that converge near the end, and each one keeps a suspenseful, breakneck pace as they both hurtle towards a chilling denouement. This really is the spiritual successor to the author's earlier work Oviposition Chronicles, and anyone who appreciated Oviposition's alien erotica themes, its reproductive inversions and conflicts between human will and animal desire, should absolutely be reading Xenofestation. Orbital Decay explores those same ideas with a depth and uncompromising sense of dread that I haven't seen in erotica before, that sets a new milestone even for this series. It's grisly and not for the faint of heart, but it's earned its emotional weight and makes no attempt to back away from the consequences of its own premise. I'm very curious - and a little scared - to see where it all goes next!
  • Xenofestation 2-05 - Fallen Angel on June 20, 2023

This one took a long while to finish (through no fault of the story - my life's been very busy of late), but it turned out to be well worth the wait. As always, the writing's filled with fascinating background snippets that are revealed with just a few casual lines: the Slow Wind of Venus is one quick and memorable example of how Paragonas takes what seems to be a rather mundane astronomical detail on paper and brings it to vivid life, elevating it into something that captures the imagination. And that's just one line! Ornella and Patience meet as new roommates, and their yin/yang chemistry might be my single favorite friendship of the series so far, with a lot of playful banter and a genuine rapport as they work to bridge the massive cultural chasm between them. The writing likewise manages a perfect tightrope walk of criticizing religion - both as a general concept and in particular the fictional "Untied Church" to which Patience belongs, which takes all all the old-time sexist elements to their most brazen conclusion - even while respecting the dignity and sincere piety of the followers that Patience represents. In that respect, Xenofestation achieves a deft balancing act that few mainstream literary works have accomplished, much less any erotica series. The real draw, of course, is both the alien sex, which includes a surprisingly fun encounter with a sky shark and a kinky new twist on the monstrous pump fly, and the criminal conspiracy that surrounds the Xenoplantation Program, as seen through the sympathetic eyes of Ortiz and her teammates as they work to unravel the mystery and claim vengeance for the lives that it's cost. The story's filled with Paragonas's sly wordplay and subtle humor (just wait until you find out what a "chastisy belt" is for), and it ends on a rousing cliffhanger. There's even a quick and intriguing peek, through the introduction of the steadfast Captain Chisholm, at the male augmentation and genetically-enhanced virility might play in this dark and hedonistic future, and the writing has now fully ascended from erotic smut to literature, with some striking, genuinely moving passages that use poetic repetition to haunting effect (to give an example would only diminish that effect, but you'll certainly know it when you see it). Very highly recommended, not just for monster erotica fans, but for dystopian sci-fi fans who don't mind meeting a few kinky monsters along the way.
  • Xenofestation 2-06 - Tattooed Agonist on July 11, 2023

Are we really two seasons into Xenofestation now? Time flies when horny alien monsters and sinister corporate conspiracies are running loose! Tattooed Agonist marks the return of a whole bevy of characters spanning the series so far, and first among them is the almost-endearingly snidely con man and alien fencer Arlo Frenk, whose story already entwines the ominous Inoue twins and now finds him tangled up with a very different, but no less dangerous, strand in the Xenofestation web that I won't spoil here. Ornella and Patience's odd-couple chemistry continues to evolve, Amber faces more goblins with an even more extreme twist this time around, and Julie and Claire's scheme evolves in a direction that's at once dark and Lovecraftian, and, through a surprise twist, oddly relatable and even adorable (no spoilers!). And, mixed in with all the extreme xenophilia encounters, are all sorts of intricate sci-fi details, dialogue and character motives that are all the more grounded against such an exotic backdrop, and fun homages ranging from John Carpenter to Douglas Adams. Absolutely recommended!
