What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I started working on The Rift, it became apparent that it was unlikely to get accepted by a publisher. The big publishing houses wouldn't like it because it has atheist/secular humanist themes. The small atheist presses wouldn't like it because it's fiction and doesn't depict some secular organizations' leaders as "Great Men of Reason." So self-publishing seemed to be the route to go.
As I came up with ideas for the Bolingbrook Babbler Stories, I enjoyed the fact that I could make it a series without a publisher pressuring me just to do variations of the same story. Instead, I could take the books in whatever direction worked for the greater story.
While I enjoy the freedom, I do understand the importance of editing my books and having professional-quality covers. Since I'm asking people to buy my books, I have to provide works that are worthy of a reader's money.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
