Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Maryland in the Burbs. There were a lot of families in our neighborhood, so I love to write about families and relationships. My books feature areas in and around the DMV (DC, Maryland, & Virginia), and many of the local highway routes. Also, the church was a big part of my upbringing so I incorporate experiences and themes that are Christian related.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing as a toddler. Lol. I really did. My mother said I would scribble pages for hours before I knew letters. I learned to read early, around three, and once I had the alphabet down, I would write pages of A's, B's. When I put words and sentences together, I wrote my first story at five, called "Fuzzy What Was He?" I added a song with it. My second big story was, "There's A Wocket in My Pocket." That one had a song too! Can you tell I was influenced by Dr. Seuss? I wrote my first serious novel, "Somethin' Extra," while on maternity leave because I was bored. I got an agent, the book was bought by a major publisher, and became a bestseller.
