Claire Kinross

Biography

Claire Kinross is the author of these published diaries written while working as a governess in Germany from 1929 – 1933, when she returned home to England. The diaries were found after my mother's death in 1991,written in small neat handwriting in handbound black books.

She first worked in Prinznig for the von Zedlich family in the large family castle and travelled in Europe with the family. She then became governess to the two young daughters of the Klinger family in Gorlitz, Ursel and Ruth, around 1930. She made friends and had romantic attachments, observing her experiences with a keen and intelligent eye. Her emotional ups and downs are faithfully recorded at the same time as her life with the Jewish Klinger family began to fall apart towards the end of her stay in Germany.

My mother was born in 1906, and became an orphan, along with her five siblings, when she was six. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father disappeared so that the aunts (her mother's sisters) each took a daughter, and she never saw her brothers again. Having been adopted by her aunt Amelia, she was never to know true family life, since Aunt Amelia was married to an executive of the Telegraph Cable company and travelled the world with her husband. There are two books of poems written before and during her stay in Germany, and many more published later in life.
