Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a middle class religious family in Southern California, and my childhood, by no stretch of the imagination, didn't set me up for success. My parents divorced and remarried, and there was a lot of turmoil I didn't know how to process. I also didn't realize until I was in my 20s that my sensitivity was due to my being a highly sensitive person (HSP) and an empath. My childhood, as well as my partial disenfranchisement to organized religion, contributed to the anxiety and negative self-image/body image issues I experience today.
To counterbalance that, playing Pokemon as a child was definitely one of the highlights of my childhood, so not every part of it was bad. It allowed some escape, especially as a teenager dealing with harder life circumstances and poverty. I felt trapped in my circumstances and wanted to go out and do things, so living vicariously through different characters gave me an opportunity to live before I had the chance to spread my wings and live myself.
This is all to say that my writing may be predisposed to highlighting a character's potential and growth and realization of their strengths or weaknesses in an effort for them to become better versions of themselves.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors include Madeleine L'Engle, Chaim Potok, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, and Veronica Roth.
