D. C. Shaftoe

Biography

Three days a week, I am a Speech-Language Pathologist, primarily working with children with autism. On those days, I spend a lot of time running, playing trains, and sitting in kiddie chairs. In 2010, as my children reached a new level of independence, I began to write. My first book was well received. It gave me the confidence to write more, and I’ve been writing ever since. I write what has been described as a unique blend of thriller, suspense, and romance. Many of my characters have experienced trauma (e.g. traumatic blindness, autism, widowhood) and real-life scenarios are not something I shy away from, though I value a happy ending. The books appeal to those looking for a clear Christian message as well as those seeking hope in a dark world. I hope you’ll enjoy reading Forged in the Jungles of Burma, Assassin’s Trap, Reckless Association, Enemy by Association, Imperfect (also published as Lethal Intentions), and my latest offering, Coffee, Kamloops, and Copper Mine.

Winner of the 2015 Next Generation Indie Book Awards and the 2013 Word Awards, D. C. Shaftoe lives in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada with her husband and two children.

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Born in India, my earliest recollections are of verdant green, monsoons, army ants and books. Just before my Kindergarten year, my family returned to Canada, settling in the Ottawa Valley, but the impact of those early years would last a lifetime. From India, came an understanding of poverty, injustice, compassion, and the need to read between the lines of culture to see the truth. So I write adventures that give readers a glimpse beyond the strictures of military juntas, a view within Autism, a peek through the blinds of conspiracy. I write about hope, passion, commitment and a love that lasts forever.
When did you first start writing?
I came to writing later in life, once I began to have the rarest of commodities a parent can own...spare time. After twenty years as a Speech-Language Pathologist working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, I was serendipitously surprised by inspiration. I've been writing ever since.
