A satisfying read. Medieval runaway with life or death stakes, gritty magic, fun characters. I will try more by this author.

This is the zombie story at its best. The author describes the constant danger, builds up suspense, and depicts action with such a fluid, dynamic style. I will definitely check out more of Carter's stories.

This is medieval fantasy meets mystery -- two sides of a coin I don't see all that often. I read most of this book in the better part of a day. I liked that Najika didn't let herself get too intimidated by being in a foreign country, and at the same time the story had this very realistic theme of cultural clashes, which speaks to the current religious, geopolitical conflicts we see today in the real world. The side elements, a little romance, some family elements, also fleshed out this story into something more than just a mystery set in an unusual desert kingdom...I can't say I've liked all the other books by this author. This one was well worth my time though - definitely my favorite of Kirsch's works.
