Smashwords Interview

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm currently just in the process of getting started with marketing, so I can't say I've yet acquired a "tried and true" technique, but I'm hoping as time goes on I'll get better acquainted with what works well and what doesn't.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a very small coastal town in on the East Coast of Canada. I can't fully describe the ways in which it's influenced the writing I've done so far, but it's definitely an upbringing that probably lends itself to some unique experiences that I will likely incorporate into a character at some point.

One interesting thing I experienced when I wrote 'Black and Blue' is trying to determine what words are used universally and what are unique to Newfoundland and Labrador dialect. Being a very isolated area, we have a lot of phrases and colloquialisms that are staples of the way that we talk and there were times I had to do a few online searches to figure out if some of these terms were used everywhere. An example I can think of is the use of the word "porch" (the area where people hang their jackets and take off their boots when entering a house) which I later realized had to be changed to "foyer" so that everyone would understand what I meant. It was definitely interesting to double-check to make sure I was using the right words!
