Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in San Francisco where I was born. City life was fun and full of diversity which is the cause of my eclectic upbringing. San Francisco has no color lines, so I find that I don't limit myself to just being Black American. Diversity is a major part of my family's make-up so multi-cultural characters often show up in my writing. I believe it is not our color that defines us, but the person we are defines us. I don't believe we should act, speak or dress a certain way because of how we look on the outside. We are who we are regardless of the color of our skin. People connect because hearts connect and the heart doesn't see, it feels. What better thing to write about?
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing for fun since I was in high school. It was my way of dreaming. A form of relaxation. Some write in their journals. I wrote books. It was my door to escaping the drama of my teen years. I remember reading them to my best friend who would hang on every word and remember getting the feeling that the characters on the page were real. We would dream up drama to insert into the stories and see how the characters would come out in the end. Who needs novellas?
