Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a large, strict Catholic family, cloistered in many ways from the real world. I was naïve and trepidatious, particularly about offending God, and the state of my soul. My father loved us, but was controlling and rigid, and my mother loved us too, but became downtrodden, worn out, overwhelmed, and voiceless. My childhood and adolescent experiences, particularly that of being drugged and raped, are what created this very personal memoir, Bloodless.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in my early life as a way of 'saving myself'. I would write to my Angel, and to Mother Mary, and pray to them to help me. I also wrote poems about my feelings and the beauty I saw in the world - things I could not share with anyone else, but felt I needed to share in some way. Writing them down helped with this, and also helped during those times when I felt very alone and misunderstood. Reading what I had written helped me to feel as if I had a friend who understood.
