Priya Ranmuthu

Biography

I am an early childhood educator by profession and writing has been my main interest in life. Being with children, talking and listening to them, being born in a culture rich in narratives and legends were contributing factors to my writing endeavour.

Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I think it is a children's fantasy written when I was about 12. It was about a candy land filled with chocolate mountains, marshmallow houses etc. I had not read any of western literature by that time. I wrote this story book for my sisters and friends. It was just hand written.
What is your writing process?
My first poem was about my mother land, Sri Lanka which I wrote when I was 10. I even did not draft or edit it and sent straight to a children's newspaper and won the 'best poem of the week' award. Then I wrote short stories and poems and won awards at school level as well as all island level. Most of my writing appeared in the newspapers. Then there was a sudden pause in my creative thoughts due to a personal reason and it caused my word flow stuck for 10 years. Now I realize I am rising up out of that dormant status.
