David Kearns

Biography

I'm a mystery writer inspired by authors who know how to mix suspense, humor, violence, passion, and humanity in a way that carries the reader along on a great ride. The Delorean Harper series tries to do just that.

I live in Portland, Oregon, the epicenter for coffee shops, microbrews, rainy winters and glorious summers.

My favorite mystery authors are John D. MacDonald, Robert Parker, James Lee Burke, Adrian McKinty, Mickey Spillane

Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I want my books to be enjoyed by as many people as possible, but the traditional publishing industry is reluctant to take a chance on a new writer. However, people who read early drafts of "All the Way Down" told me that they liked it more than many of the mainstream novels they read. That built my confidence that I had a story worth telling, so I decided to find a different avenue for publishing. I worked with graphic artists to design a cover that fit what I wanted perfectly, completing my vision for the story. Seeing my book available for reading alongside those of authors I respect is gratifying and makes me want to keep writing. I encourage other writers who've been frustrated by the traditional publishing industry to publish it themselves as an indie author. It's a lot of fun!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has a very efficient process for getting my books in front of readers. I was able to publish my novel onto Smashwords with just a few hours effort. Most of that time was spent reading one of the excellent online tutorials about proper formatting. Once I'd made the minimal changes to my Microsoft Word file, the publishing process was trivial. Smashwords hosts my book on their own site, and took care of distributing the novel through other venues such as Barnes and Noble. Within a few weeks of publishing I had hundreds of downloads of my story. Smashwords made that possible.
