Dave Mandel

Born in New York City, grew up in California, spent special years in Canada, have seen great things and sad.

We never cease to be what we've been, as we become more -- or less. I am a professional musician/recording artist, city planner, landscape architect, college teacher, contractor, writer, ditch-digger, truck-driver, cook, and bum. The last is the hardest to do well: as society conditions us from infancy to be increasingly productive, we find guilt-free relaxation only with increasing difficulty.

Smashwords Interview

Why do you write?
From the intro to HIPPIE: "We write to entertain, to enlighten, to unburden ouselves, to win attention, love and sex, to stave off insanity or to embrace it; or, we write to achieve immortality -- not necessarily for ego’s sake but sometimes to not just fade away, all that we have been and seen lost."
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Did I grow up? My childhood was in Manhattan and a bit of upstate New York, my youth in California, Toronto, and Vancouver. My adulthood, assuming that's what this is, continues to occur mainly on the West Coast -- but we have traveled far and wide, and continue to visit many cultures and places.

My parents never told us we should appreciate nature's beauties, but they took us out into them and made me an optimist by doing so. A wind-beaten seashore, a deep forest and a single flower, a high desert, glacier'd peaks, wild seas -- these may be frightening at one moment but always give me a sense of rightness and peace.

That sense produces calm and confidence, and surely molds my way of telling tales. So, it's not so much specific places I've inhabited as all I've seen, felt, heard, touched that makes me write hopefully.

As many evils as I have seen, as much damage as we may do to our planet and one another, I have a deep faith in the universe's ability to shrug off our foibles and continue to be both scary and gorgeous.

"Snapshots" is the wrong word. It suggests pictures taken in a hurry and without much attention to details, YOU know, where the devil lives. But life does give us vignettes: brief flashes of what it's all about, SHORT SHORTS. What makes us tick, what makes us stick, what we fear and memories dear.
