About the Author
Marcie Murray currently makes her home in an Oregon Coast Range hamlet west of Portland. Riparian woodlands there host intriguing places to create. Her hobbies include painting and drawing; dreaming up improbable home improvement projects; reading epic historical novels, and deciphering her Snowshoe Siamese cat's English-with-Limited-Consonants requests.
She has worked in advertising agencies as an art director, illustrator and graphic designer; also a bullpen artist for commercial printers. Other jobs included stints with the Forest Services [U.S. and Oregon State]; and as a trail guide for horseback outfitters.
Four seasons of Thoroughbred racing hot-walker and groom experiences on Del Mar [CA] Turf Club's backstretch, inspired her second novel, "Trickster's Odds", [prequel to "One Diamond Shy"] also published at Smashwords. She thanks you for the read, and encourages mail to: BurgundyMare5@gmail.com.
When did you first start writing?
Grade One of primary school, actually. A half-page story about a little Christmas tree that was never chosen from its lot. I must have been channeling Charles Schultz at the time, because his Charlie Brown Christmas cartoon followed a similar theme - that or the Ugly Duckling. It seems the Idea Fairy distributes notions indiscriminately. Some folks pick up on her radio broadcasts and run with them, others pick up the same waves and don't have means, or a clue to capitalize on them.
What's the story behind your latest book?
One Diamond Shy has a lot of truth in it. Or truths. Have you ever owned an object that everybody else thought valueless? Yet you alone believed in its magic or value, and would enthusiastically defend it. I had such a thing. Every analysis told me I was wrong -- no magic here -- but I continued believing past all sensible remonstrance of expert opinions. As a wise person once said, "If you don't think you're hammered and three people tell you you are -- lie down." The "magic" of that item delivered the basic plot to ODS, and became infused with the thematic question: "Can trust, repeatedly broken, be mended well enough to enable a relationship to survive?"
A trumped-up murder charge forces a young Native American doctor to flee his home and practice to assume a fugitive existence north of the border between enmity and captivation by a quirky Irish-American colleen, a horse racing worker with an arrest record and a vengeful mission to take back her stolen property from the woman who hates her far beyond any stretch of Trickster's Odds.
A rare diamond rough, a rascal diamond-in-the-rough, and one scruffy artist trying to hold them both, power One Diamond Shy by Marcie Murray. How far can jilted Raleigh Leary rely on prospector Gus Clast? Will he keep secrets and spill hers to a shady coworker looking to exploit her rock? Betrayal and sacrifice bond the pair and drive them apart in this journey of a luckless "dauber with a dream."
