Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
My writing process is as follows: I discover a topic that is interesting to me then I build a story around it. Fo my first book, Emma's Run, I am a runner so wanted my main character to be a runner with a strong character. I love independent book stores in old buildings of brick and lots of wood so that was how I saw the setting for my story. It's a mystery who twists and turns. My second book, Jane's Aliens, is another mystery with twists and turns and involves fun loving and helpful aliens. I wrote about good aliens. My aliens are more like guardians. "Hooch Runners" is a mystery built around an actual secret distillery cabin hidden up in the southern Illinois bluffs over looking the Mississippi Valley and crossing the creek at an angle to a secret road was the actual way to get to the cabin. In all my books I come to know the characters as real people and I am merely the observer rather than the creator of my characters as they take on a life of their own. I enjoy writing in side at coffee houses when its raining or while sitting outside with my laptop under a tree and being one with nature. Writing is like meditating where I can be centered and focused and as I write I see the story play out in my head like a movie. I enjoy writing books and hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.
How do you approach cover design?
I enjoy drawing and so I draw my own cover pictures. I approach cover design by considering the main person or item of what the story is about. By the time I get to cover design, I have enmeshed with my characters, and want to draw them as I see them in my mind's eye as I wrote about them. For Emma's Run I drew the main character and her girlfriend as I had described them in the book. For Jane's Aliens I drew three gray aliens hiding in the bushes as they often did in the book. And for Hooch Runners I drew an old Model T for the cover. Adding something personal to the cover as I do is a form of closure to me, and a snapshot of what I put into the story, a way of contributing a snapshot of the story.
