Matilda the Queen
by Richard Rose
Matilda (Maud), daughter to and heir of Henry I of England, fights an 18-year civil war, when the throne is usurped by her cousin, Stephen, upon the death of Henry. At the time, Matilda is pregnant by her second husband, Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, and unable to attend the funeral. Stephen takes advantage of this and has himself crowned king only three weeks after Henry's death.
