What motivated you to become an indie author?
I write stories that deal realistically with the relations between gay males and their lovers, old and young. Alyson Books told me ten years ago that there was no market for anything dealing with my age group because that audience was decimated by AIDS. Perhaps they were right at that time. But men grow older each year, and the market for stories that involve more than romance on the beach between two twinks is now much larger. With Indie publishing, I was finally able to show my writing to an appreciative audience.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Preparing the text of a book, editing it, and getting it out there to so many ebook sellers is simplicity itself. Any errors I find, or improvements I want to make, are instantly available; no waiting for the publication of a second edition. I didn't know there were so many formats to cover, and writing for each would take time away from writing new material. Smashwords is "do-it-once" and all formats are automatically taken care of. Smashwords also directs readers to the sites where hard copies are sold. In the last few months, I have noticed an increase in the purchase of print copies.
