Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin---one of two children in my family. I was the older by 4 1/2 years and often had to entertain myself as both my Parents had full time jobs. By 3rd grade, i was already reading at the 8th grade level and I haven't stopped since. I started out with mysteries, Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle et al. and by College, graduated to J.R.R. Tolkien, whose "Lord of the Rings" I read my freshmen year. Virtually no-one comes close to the Master. I also read comic-books for a long period of my life and worked in B.Dalton bookstores, the precursor to Barnes & Noble, where I envisioned my name being on the cover and spine of books entertaining others. My dream is becoming a reality---i'm giving back to the entertainment field just what I received from it. Influences on my writing from where I grew up---I camped with my folks all around the State of Wisconsin and the United States itself---this had a lot to do with where I set my books. Now it is places I want to go to that are influencing my writing, such as Ireland, Angkor Wat, Easter Island, Greece and other exotic locals. The other way where i was raised and how it influenced my writing is that I felt I wanted to payback the countries whose Authors thrilled me with their novels and characters by giving them my characters, my stories, my sweat and toil, and with a growing list of downloads incurring in Great Britain, Canada, Australia and others, I feel that this is being accomplished. What a heady rush!
When did you first start writing?
.I first started writing right after College in the '80's but didn't seriously attack this calling till seven years ago, while I was working at Wal Mart. I was helping with the inventory of the Fabrics and Craft department, mostly measuring bolts of fabric and ribbons. The Manager of the Department at the time was Margaret and she ended up calling me "The Ribbon King", which sparked an interest in writing again. Though i didn't use the term or title, I did start a major renaissance in writing, which has led me in directions that i did not forsee. THe characters in my series, "The Airwalker Chronicles", have taken on lives of their own and the series has expanded to eleven books, two of which our available on Smashwords with the third soon to be added.
