Emily Kay Johnson lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, two boys, and two cats. If you don't know who she is, that's okay. The important people to know about are the Dudes. At least, that's what her writing partner, Tyler, says. Luckily, no madcap plans or crazy schemes EVER happen in Emily's quiet suburb!
Her goal, like that of most writers, is to spend as much of the day in a fantasy world as possible.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was a suburban kid with working parents. Now my kids are living the same kind of life. I think a lot of kids experience this kind of quiet, protected childhood. It's what we parents want for them despite how they may crave adventure. This is where the Dudes come in. I grew up reading Ramona and Henry Huggins and Henry Read and Alvin Fernald and the Herdmans--kids who lived in neighborhoods where nothing ever happened except the incidents they created. These kids DID stuff (often to the surprise or mortification of their parents). They didn't sit around inside. They responded creatively to their environment. To me, the most exciting stories were the things that I would never do but that could have happened--often with unexpected and hilarious results. The best stories were the ones that made you laugh out loud and want to tell someone about it, maybe your parents even!
What's the story behind your latest book?
Dudes Take Over started with my son's elementary school. Every year the teachers used some kind of fake currency as an incentive for kids to turn in their homework. I immediately saw the potential to manipulate this fake economy. But what type of reward would really motivate the Dudes? The ultimate dart gun!
