Glen McPherson

Biography

My previous publishing experience has been in the area of non-fiction (two 700 page texts published by Springer-Verlag out of New York), and a series of weekly newspaper articles that arose from my fascination for the influence on our society of technological change. I have no interest in computers, the internet, mobile phones or iPods in their own right. But I am fascinated by the impact they have on the way we live and how our lives are being changed by technology.
The challenging task for me is to grapple with the complexity that accompanies change. For example, the introduction of Google didn't simply give us access to unlimited information, it raised ethical issues particularly in relation to censorship, serious concerns for parents about how to control their children's access to information, difficulties for teachers who saw students handing in assignments that were supposedly their own thoughts, but contained slabs of work copied off the internet. The list is endless. On my website listed in my profile I explore some of the challenging issues.
With this background, I wrote a novel in the form of an adventure story that is based on opportunities global communication offers young entrepreneurs. At the same time, it is a cautionary tale of the power of human maturity and experience. I would be delighted if you read it.
This novel was written first and foremost as an adventure story that I hope will have an appeal to an audience that covers a wide age range.
It is written in the style of Jeffery Archer, with a battle between the good guys and the bad guys that has the bad guys in ascendancy for much of the book and the good guys struggling to find a way to get back on top.
Beneath the fiction story there are issues raised about the place of teenagers in society, what they might contribute, and the stresses that are placed on them if they attempt to go beyond the natural boundaries of teenagers.
My aim has been to use this sub text to encourage both teenagers and their parents to think about how the world is changing for the young people living in it today.
