Graeme Buckley was born in Cairns in 1957. His love of the sea was nurtured early by his father and by Dr. Barnes, the family doctor, a renowned Marine Biologist who did important research on box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri). Graeme studied visual arts in Townsville in 1979/80 where he met the love of his life. They moved to Adelaide in 1981 to continue their art studies, and attended the first of several writing courses at this time. After a time in Gympie they returned to Townsville in 1989.
In 2002 he received a BSc. in Marine Biology from James Cook University in Townsville. His interest in Pagan spirituality came from an understanding that that all life as we know it is composed of matter of the Earth powered by the energy of the Sun. He realized that it could be a valid scientific analogy to refer to the Earth as ‘Mother’ and the Sun as ‘Father’. The Self-Initiation of the Witch Chironex was written during the ensuing period.
