Melvin M. Harter graduated from the University of Illinois in 1948 where he helped publish the short-lived Collegiate Magazine.
He then went to medical school in Geneva, Switzerland. There he married. He and his wife have two sons, a doctor and a lawyer.
Harter then trained in Internal Medicine mostly at Northwestern University and the VA in Chicago, became Board Certified and practiced and taught in Chicago.
In 1956 the Navy brought him to Mare Island, California Hospital for two years. Chicago's 1967 snowstorm and tornado drove him back to Los Angeles where he practiced in Burbank’s media district until 1986. He then developed a statewide disability evaluation practice where every consultation generated a detailed 6,000 word written report. Harter called it SciFi because he was required to translate factual medicine into the fiction that is law.
In 1993 Harter retired and went back to his first love, writing.
Harter's writing credits include PAVIS, an illustrated audiotaped “Patient Audio-Visual Education System” marketed by McGraw-Hill in 1976.
Now in retirement he incessantly rewrites two novels and a screenplay. His essays have appeared in local newspapers. He wrote a monthly humor column for Today’s Senior Magazine (www.todaysr.com).
