Harnam Shunkumar is a professional real estate practitioner. He presently lives with his wife Serra in a suburb near Durban in South Africa. This short novel, “The Journey - A Short Story”, is his first published creative work as an author. He is working on completing his next work; a full length novel entitled “White Collar Charm”. When he’s not writing or involved in his real estate practice, he enjoys reading creative works by other authors, cooking and travelling down the KwaZulu/Natal south coast.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a real estate practitioner, so I work long hours. I also enjoy cooking, and when we can make the time we travel along the KwaZulu/Natal south coast.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Durban area. My experiences during my growing up years have played a significant role in influencing my writing for my first creative work, my short novel "The Journey - A Short Story". There were many factors, which I won't divulge on this forum, that impacted on my life. But this short novel is not based on my life.
Mourning the death of his father and tormented by the politics of the land, Shami realizes that he will do what needs to be done: for the sake of his future and that of his family's. Driven into poverty and an uncertain future in his childhood, he daringly enters a world of political activism. He could face the wrath of the state security police. The enemy is powerful and serve their own justice.
